Lodges of the First Masonic DistrictThe First Masonic District is composed of eight Lodges and, blessed by both excellent rail and highway transportation, we serve not only our local communities, but also have the opportunity to join in fellowship between Lodges. District activities are the norm here in the First District. The First District geographically consists of Sussex County and the northern part of both Warren and Morris Counties in northwestern New Jersey. This historical area of our state consists of woodland covered rolling hills and is the eastern shore of about 50 miles of the Delaware River. While today an agricultural and recreational area, hidden within these hills are the remains of revolutionary war era iron mines, the limestone mines of Thomas Edison, and the primitive blast furnaces that manufactured munitions for the American Revolution. Many miles of the Morris Canal are within our district, a premier engineering feat in its time, later replaced with half a dozen railroads in the 19th century and the Lackawanna Cutoff - one of the largest earth moving projects of the 20th Century. These Lodges were formed in many cases by the ancestors of the current members. Occassionally a degree will be held in a quarry or a miners or railroad nite will be sponsored, reminders of the Lodge's "operative" heritage. We have a meeting in one of the Lodges almost every nite of the month and look forward to visits from travellers at any of our communciations. |
