HISTORY OF ADONIRAM COUNCIL, NO. 9 R.&S.M. 1923

PG. 2 of 4

The early history of Adoniram Council is somewhat obscure as a careful search of the printed proceedings of Grand Council show statements that appear to be contradictory.

In a report of T. H. R. Redway, D.G.M. made in 1873, the first mention is made of Adoniram under date of January 21 of that year it appears that a charter was issued. On January 16 1874, nearly a year later, Adoniram Council no. 9 was instituted by M.I.G.M., T. H. R. Redway, but in the list of Councils reported in 1875, no mention is made of it. In 1876 a motion was made in Grand Council that Adoniram No. 9 should be notified that their charter would be revoked unless returns are made to the Grand Council in 1877. At this session of the Grand Council, the Grand Recorder reported No. 9 was not represented and had paid no dues since January 1874.
The M.I.G.M., in 1878 reported that he was unable to obtain a reply to letters sent to the Thrice Illustrious Master of No. 9 and the committee on Doings of Grand Officers recommended that the charter be declared forfeited. The report was adopted and the charter was declared forteited.

Then in the proceedings of 1879, M.I.G.M. George Scott reports that he had called three times during the year 1878 on T.I.M. William Mclilhaney of No. 9 but did not secure the charter. The Grand Recorder wrote but received no reply. The committee on Doings of Grand Officers stated in their opinion the Council was extinct. In 1880 the M.I.G.M., in his report to the Grand Council, says that he called three times and wrote once to the T.I.M. of Adoniram No. 9 but did not find him in and could get no reply. The Committee on Doings of Grand Officers advised on giving the Council another year in which to revive. Then in the proceedings of 1881 is found in the M.T. Grand Masters report that he was unable to obtain replies from anyone connected with Adoniram Council.

The M.I.G.M. reports in 1882 that several companions who had taken dimits for the purpose of joining Adoniram Council when it was instituted, but they did not know whether or not they had been elected or not, and were unable to secure the return of their demits. On motion, the Grand Recorder was authorized to issue dimits to properly vouched for Companions of Adoniram No. 9.

A period of sixteen years seem to have elapsed before mention is again made of Adoniram Council and that in the report of A. G. Yothers, M.I.G.M., who in 1898 states receiving a communication from Companion R. A. Shirrefs about reviving Adoniram.
